How to speed up Your Metabolism

Q: How can I find out if I have a slow metabolism?

Many hospitals and even some gyms offer a quick, Breathalyzer-style metabolism test that can analyze your calorie-burning capability. Crank up your metabolic engine with intense, full-body workouts. Extra-lean muscle burns calories for hours after your last rep.

Q: How can I speed up my metabolism?

Metabolism is the energy needed to keep us alive (basal metabolic rate) and to perform other bodily functions beyond simply sustaining life. By far, the most important contributor to our metabolic rate is genetics. Some people just burn calories faster than others. That doesn’t mean they are blessed with the ability to eat all they want without gaining weight. Naturally thin people stop eating when they feel full. Age is the next most important contributor. We need 10% fewer calories every decade of life after the 20s. The liver accounts for more than a quarter of our energy expenditures, but there is no way to increase its activity. The brain is next but while thinking uses energy, it is not much more than the energy needed to keep us alive.

~Drugs
For example: excess thyroid hormone raises metabolism like adrenaline, a drug used to stimulate a stopped heart or treat life threatening allergic reactions, increases muscular activity, but the side effects are rapid heart rate and shakiness. Caffeine produces a small increase in metabolism if taken before 5pm you may not get insomnia but if too much is taken it will also cause nervousness and heartburn.


~Exercise
Get your heart rate going with a cardio workout and lift weights to increase muscle size.


~Water
Drink lots of it. How much? Your water needs depend on many factors, including your health, how active you are and where you live.
