What is Drunkorexia?

Drunkorexia is a new slang term that describes the practice of restricting food intake in order to drink more alcohol.

You won't find this one in the DSM-IV manual for diagnosing health disorders. The Morning show looked exclusively at how this practice affects women.

Statistics suggest that 30% of 18-24 year olds skip food in order to drink more.

In recent years, binge-drinking patterns among young women have grown to match that of men. In order to maintain weight, many young women will go without meals if anticipating a drinking session later on.

It's no laughing matter. Just looking at college students only - over 1,400 calorie age around18-24 each year due to alcohol related injuries.

Excessive alcohol consumption is a form of self-medication that is very hard on the body. Sadly many people have decided that they are not able to "have fun" without being intoxicated.

This diet is a classic example of high protein, low carb eating. Most bodybuilders and celebrities will have a cheat meal or cheat day. The idea of this is that eating healthy foods 6 days of the week puts the metabolism in a steady pattern, but with the addition of a cheat food (either a whole day or one meal..one meal is recommended) it will shock the metabolism into working harder and faster. Thus, speeding it up and ultimately losing more weight.

story 1: She worked out 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. Did 45 mins of strength training, squats and lunges (3x20) and squat jumps. She did 30-45 minutes of cardio and was on the Zone diet. She ate plenty grilled chicken, fish and steak with salad / vegetables.

story 2: She was on the Atkins diet, ate no sugar and worked out two hours every day.

story 3: She worked out for 2 hours six days a week. She did the South Beach diet, ate no sugar and was motivated by having to wear a bikini on the big screen.

story 4: She worked out for 1 hour and 30 mins almost every day. She did one hour of weights and 30 minutes of cardio. The main exercises were lunges and squats where she lifted 7 1/2 lb dumbbells.

story 5: She worked out two hours a day doing squats and lunges. She simply stopped eating crap. No sugar with the exception of fruit.

story 6: she worked out an hour and a half a day six days a week. Her workout routine varied from week to week. She cut out processed foods and ate mostly grilled chicken, fish and green vegetables. She mostly did lower body weight training with 20-24 reps per set. She walked on the treadmill and increased to a slight jog for 5 - 10 minutes. She did 3 sets of dumbbell rows while in the squat position for 20 - 24 reps per set.

Is Alcohol Making You Fat?



All alcohols have the same effect on the body but different alcohols have different calorie and alcohol levels. The source of the sugar determines the type of alcohol. Wine comes from grapes and beer comes from hops. One-ounce wine has 17 to 29 calories and one-ounce of beer has 11 to 14 calories.

Q. Why does drinking alcohol make it harder for you to lose weight?

A. Yes for three bloody good reasons.

First, is how the body absorbs alcohol. All other foods and drinks are digested, converted and transported to cells and tissues. Alcohol’s empty calories go directly to the blood stream.

Note: Empty calories are calories with little or no nutritional value.

Second, is how alcohol has 7 calories per gram that must be worked off or stored as fat and you’re most likely not heading to the gym. It takes as few as three drinks to cause a hangover. The average symptoms of a hangover: headache, fatigue, dehydration, and nervousness. Try working out while feeling like that.

Third, is how alcohol impairs the your metabolism. Your basal metabolic rate will decline, making it even harder to lose weight.

Two beers or two glasses of wine each day, is about 1,400 calories per week, or about 73,000 calories per year and unless those calories are burned off you will gain 20 lbs!

Remember, weight loss is a simple formula. You must burn more calories than you consume, and 3,500 burned calories equals one pound of weight loss.
